Bergsøy IL open the 2026/2027 season in the REMA 1000-ligaen, Norway's top handball division, having won promotion out of the 1. Division after years of knocking on the door.

The men's team have never lifted a national title, and their record in the NM Cup was, until recently, a pair of third-round appearances from the 1970s. That mark fell in 2024/2025, when Bergsøy beat Ørsta 40-25 to reach the third round again, before going out narrowly to Kolstad.

Home games are played in front of barely 330 people at REMA Arena Fosnavåg. The fixture that matters most locally is against HK-72 Sande, contested as the Ytre Søre-derby, with Ørsta IL supplying the other side of the rivalry.

The squad has drawn in players from well beyond Sunnmøre — a Danish international in Kristoffer Rosenkilde, a Lithuanian in Deividas Jovaišas, a Latvian international in Raivis Gorbunovs — but it is Emil Raknes, the veteran captain, who is credited with steering the group through the promotion campaign, the season the club had waited decades for.
