Buffalo's entry in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) was one of the league's charter members in 1946.
James Breuil owned the team. It played inside Civic Stadium, known around Buffalo as War Memorial Stadium. It was the only season the city fielded a team under the Bisons name.
By 1947 the franchise had become the Buffalo Bills, and it stayed that way until the AAFC folded in 1949 and the team dissolved with it rather than joining the National Football League (NFL) merger. The name outlived the club: when the NFL awarded Buffalo a new franchise in 1960, it took the Bills name in tribute to the side that had carried it through the 1940s.
That side had started out in royal blue, silver and white as one of the AAFC's charter members in 1946, built for a league that had not existed the year before.
