Bisons Loimaa has carried that improbability for six decades, growing out of a club founded in 1964 as Loimaan Korikonkarit.

Promotion to the Korisliiga in 2011 brought sponsorship money and a new name, Nilan Bisons Loimaa, and with it a run that a club this size had no obvious right to. Under head coach Greg Gibson, Loimaa won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013, with the American guard Jeb Ivey named Finals MVP both years. A runners-up finish followed in 2015, again against Kataja Basket, the club against which most of Loimaa's biggest matches have been played.

The club also stepped outside Finland during those years, playing in the EuroCup and then in the VTB United League, competing against clubs from Russia and the wider region on a budget built for a domestic league. That reach came at a cost. By 2016, unpaid salaries and tax debts caught up with the operating company, Loimaa Bisons Oy, which went bankrupt and dropped the team out of the Korisliiga entirely. Rebuilding from the second division took five years; promotion back to the top flight came in 2021.

Among the details that stick to the club is a minority shareholder with no connection to basketball: Teemu Selänne, the ice hockey player, has held a stake in the operation. The team still plays at Loimaan liikuntahalli, a hall seating little more than 1,200, where a town of Loimaa's size fills the seats for nights that once carried it to the top of Finnish basketball.
