KTP Basket Kotka

KTP Basket once ruled Finnish basketball so completely that between 1978 and 1993 the club collected nine Finnish Cup titles. The run began in a town, and it kept going through the mid-1980s and into the early 1990s almost without interruption, with cup wins in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1987 alone.

The league championship followed a different rhythm. KTP took Korisliiga titles in 1957–58 and 1966–67, then went two decades before returning to the top in 1987–88, followed by three more in the space of six seasons, the last in 1993–94. Between those wins sat seven runner-up finishes, including four in a row from 1983 to 1987 — a side that reached the final almost as a matter of habit without always closing it out.

The basketball section traces its roots to Kotkan Työväen Palloilijat, a multi-sport club founded on 22 September 1927, though the basketball team itself only took shape in the early 1950s. Games are played in green and white at the Steveco-areena.

Across the Kymenlaakso region, Kouvot in nearby Kouvola has supplied the club's sharpest rivalry, the two meeting in what is known locally as the Kymenlaakso derby. On court, Larry Pounds carried the club to the league's MVP award in 1991.
