Bruggen

St. Gallen splits its handball loyalties across the city, and in the Bruggen quarter that loyalty has a name of its own: the Bröggler, taken from the local dialect word for the neighbourhood. HC Bruggen has carried it since 1991, marking the club's twenty-fifth year with a celebration in 2016.

The men's and women's sides both go by the nickname, playing in yellow and blue at the Athletik Zentrum St. Gallen, a venue that holds 3,000 between seats and standing room. Liga and 2. Liga, without ever reaching a Nationalliga title or lifting the Schweizer Cup.

What the club has built instead is a pipeline. Otmar and LC Brühl, the two clubs that define the city's bigger derby and that Bruggen's own graduates end up facing in St. Gallen colours other than their own. Otmar's first choice, returned to Bruggen later in his career.

St. Otmar and SG Fides remain the sides Bruggen measures itself against locally, even if the city's headline derby belongs to others.
