In 1924 Sam Deutsch bought the Canton Bulldogs and shifted the franchise to Cleveland.
The club began as the Canton Athletic Club, an amateur outfit in 1903 that turned professional within two years and settled on the Bulldogs name in 1906. By 1920 it was a charter member of the league that became the NFL, playing out of League Field in front of crowds of up to 8,000, in maroon and white.
Ohio League titles came first, three of them before the NFL existed for Canton to join.
The name kept being passed around after that. Cleveland's Bulldogs folded within a few seasons, and in 1929 the Pottsville Maroons wore the Bulldogs name for one last NFL year, in Boston, finishing 4–4 before disappearing too.
