Charleville Mezieres

Every league fixture between the Carolos and Champagne Basket carries the weight of a wider grudge — the two clubs meet in what the local press calls the Derby Grand Est, and neither side needs reminding what it means.

The town's own story sits underneath the club's name. Étoile started life in Mézières in 1921, and it was only in 1958, with the two towns still separate, that the club made the short move across to Charleville. When Charleville and Mézières merged into a single municipality in 1966, the club took the joined name it still carries.

The years that came just before that move were the ones worth remembering. Under coach Jean Perniceni, Étoile won its first French championship in 1954-55, beating Stade Français, then took the Double in 1958 — the league final against PUC followed by the Cup — and reached the quarter-finals of the European Champion Clubs' Cup that same season. Jean-Paul Beugnot anchored those teams at centre, a pivot reckoned among the best in Europe at the time, before he moved into coaching himself and later saw his sons Éric and Grégor follow him into the game.

What came after was a slow drift downward, and by 1999 the club had fallen as far as NM2. Nikola Antić took over in 2004 and rebuilt within five years, pushing the club back up to Pro B by 2009. The climb has never held. Relegation followed a return to Pro B in 2012, and administrative trouble in 2019 sent the club down again to NM2. Only for the 2024-2025 season did Étoile make it back to NM1, a level still some distance from the Pro B football of Antić's rebuild.
