Lardarius Webb played cornerback at Nicholls in the mid-2000s and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2009. He is also one of the fifteen consensus All-Americans the program has produced, and one of the few to earn the honour twice, in 2007 and 2008.
The Colonels represent Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and the school's history as an ROTC-dominated institution made colonel the rank to hold, and the mascot still carries the name Colonel Tillou. The team fielded its first side in 1972, the same year it opened its rivalry with the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in what became the River Bell Classic. The series went dark for two decades after Southeastern dropped football in 1985 and only picked back up in 2005.
