The club exists because a businessman from Ibagué, Manuel Rubio Chávez, decided during the 1954 National Games in Cali that Tolima needed a team of its own. He sent money to Argentina, where Juan Barbieri put together a squad of Argentine and Colombian players — among them Jorge Gandulfo, José Hamardo and Enrique Laino — and the club was founded on 18 December 1954, debuting in the top flight the following year. It wore the kit of Racing Club at the start, which is why maroon and gold have stayed its colours ever since.

Two goalkeepers separate by a generation left their mark. Danovis Banguero belongs to the later era, the one who converted the winning penalty against Atlético Nacional to seal the 2018 Apertura.

Home is the Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro, known locally as the Palogrande, holding somewhere around 30,000 in Ibagué.
