Fighting Scots

Football at the school goes back to the 1930s, well before that affiliation, but it was the PSAC that gave the program a rival worth beating year after year, West Chester's Golden Rams chief among them in the more recent meetings.

The university predates the sport by decades. It opened in 1857 as Edinboro Academy, long before anyone in Pennsylvania was drawing up a schedule of conference football, and the "Scots" in the name traces to that early identity. Red and white have stayed the colours since.

Now folded into PennWest Edinboro after the university's merger, the football team plays on in NCAA Division II, still inside the PSAC, still working from a program with no single tidy origin story separate from the school's own — the football history simply runs alongside the institution's, without a founding date of its own to mark.
