The franchise began life far from Connecticut, as the Orlando Miracle, one of the expansion sides added to the Women's National Basketball Association in 1999. The Mohegan Tribe bought the team in 2003 and moved it north to Uncasville, where it took the name Sun and settled into the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Orange became the team's defining colour, worn against navy blue and white, and the Sun built a reputation for reaching finals without closing them out. They went to the WNBA Finals in 2004 and 2005, losing both times, to the Seattle Storm and then the Sacramento Monarchs, before two long return trips: a 2019 defeat to the Washington Mystics and a 2022 loss to the Las Vegas Aces. Three Eastern Conference titles, in 2004, 2005 and 2019, mark the seasons when Connecticut came closest. A championship has still eluded them.

Games against the New York Liberty carry the sharpest edge of any on the Sun's calendar, with the 2019 Finals loss to Washington adding its own weight to the rivalry with the Mystics.
