The franchise opened play in 1999 and beat the Detroit Shock 68–51 in its first regular-season outing.
What followed took over a decade to build. Under Cheryl Reeve, Minnesota reached the Finals six times in seven seasons. The championships came in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. The rivalry with the Los Angeles Sparks defined that stretch: four straight playoff meetings between the two, including back-to-back Finals in 2016 and 2017, a series often pointed to as the decade's signature matchup.
Seimone Augustus, the 2006 Rookie of the Year, took Finals MVP honours in 2011 and wears number 33 in the rafters. Sylvia Fowles arrived later and left as a two-time Finals MVP and league MVP in 2017. Rebekkah Brunson, known simply as "The Machine," collected five championships across her career and had her number 32 retired alongside them.
The current side has already found its own moment, with Napheesa Collier leading Minnesota to the 2024 Commissioner's Cup.
