Olivia Miles breaks Caitlin Clark's WNBA rookie scoring record
Minnesota Lynx guard Olivia Miles scored 21 points in a 101-89 win over the Connecticut Sun to pass Caitlin Clark's rookie scoring mark in 40 games.
Olivia Miles scored 21 points in the Minnesota Lynx's 101-89 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday and took the WNBA rookie scoring record from Caitlin Clark.
Miles and Clark were level at 769 points going into the game. The record fell on a free throw 29 seconds into the second quarter, after Miles had gone scoreless in the first. She finished 7 of 10 from the field and 6 of 6 from the line. Both players reached the mark in 40 games.
The Lynx guard, an All-Star and the second pick in the draft after college ball at Notre Dame and TCU, is averaging 19.7 points, 6.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds. Minnesota lead the league table; Connecticut are seventh.
Clark's marks have gone before. On 4 June Miles hit eight three-pointers against Golden State, one more than Clark's best in a game by a rookie. She also reached 350 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists in 21 games, one quicker than Clark and Andrea Stinson, the former Charlotte Sting guard.
Miles put the record down to the team around her.
If Minnesota keep their place at the top, Miles's numbers will be part of the case for the rookie awards, though that is a matter for the voters.
