Claes Ribendahl grew up in the Hallby system and went on to win 107 caps for Sweden between 1976 and 1983.

That peak fell in the 1962/63 season, when Hallby finished second in the Allsvenskan and drew 1,966 spectators to a match, still the club's attendance record. Third place followed in 1963/64, fourth in 1964/65, and then relegation in 1965/66 closed the door on it. What came after was decades of near misses: Division 1 titles in 1969, 1970 and 1971, each followed by a lost promotion playoff, and a heavier fall into Division 3 in 1978 before the climb back to Division 2 in 1981. Under player-coach Johan Petersson the team finished third in Allsvenskan in 2007 and reached the playoffs against HK Drott, losing the deciding match. Promotion finally came in 2019, via the playoffs against HIF Karlskrona, and Hallby finished 10th on its return to the top flight.

The women's side has since matched that step, reaching the top division for the first time in 2022 after beating Tyresö HF in the playoffs.

Matches against Jönköpings HF, the Jönköping Derby, sharpened further by regional meetings with Skövde HF and Amo HK. Hallby now play their home games at Jönköpings idrottshus, known to supporters as Kåken, in blue and white. Both the men's and women's teams currently compete in the Handbollsligan.
