Hong Kong's basketball association had already been affiliated with FIBA for over a decade when a women's national side took shape under its banner in 1968.

Qualifiers for the FIBA Women's Asia Cup are usually played at the Tsuen Wan Sports Centre, a ground that seats around 1,900 across fixed and retractable stands, though the team has also turned out at Mong Kok Stadium and the newer Kai Tak Sports Park. Cheuk Ting has carried the side as captain in recent years, a player whose reputation extends beyond the national team's results into street basketball, where she reached the final of the Red Bull Queen of the Rock global event.

The most recent measure of where the team stands came in the 2023 FIBA Women's Asia Cup Division B, where Hong Kong's run ended against Iran, a side that went on to finish as runners-up. No major honour appears on the team's record, and a win over one of Asia's established powers is still something Hong Kong has not managed.
