The programme traces back to the breakup of the Soviet Union, when the Kazakh SSR side had to become a national team in its own right. The National Basketball Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan took shape in 1991, and the women's team followed in 1993.

That earlier record belongs to a different era: under the Soviet structure, Kazakhstan finished fifth at the Asian Games four times running, in 1974, 1978, 1982 and 1986. Independence brought a long gap from that stage rather than a continuation of it.

The name Steppe Wolves came much later and by a different route — supporters chose it in a vote in 2017, losing the Division B final of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup to India by two points, 73-75. The following campaigns did not reach that mark again: fourth place in 2021, then sixth in 2023 after a defeat to Malaysia in the playoff for fifth.

The squad trains and plays out of Astana, drawing at times on the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace, though a national team of this kind has no single ground to call its own. Sitting around 46th in Asia's rankings, Kazakhstan head into their next Asia Cup qualification.
