Humble Lions

May Pen's football club began as something closer to a mission than a team. The name carries that intent forward — 'Lion' recalls the Lion of Judah, tied to Haile Selassie I and Rastafarian belief, while 'Humble' points to the modesty the community valued. Registered as Humble Lions F.C., the club is still spoken of by supporters in the singular, as the 'Singular Humble Lion'.

Yellow shirts, red shorts and green socks have stayed constant, but home turf has not been simple. The Effortville Community Centre, a 1,500-seat ground in the May Pen suburb of Effortville, is the club's own, though its condition and size have pushed Humble Lions to play home fixtures at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Kingston instead in recent years.

Top-flight football arrived through the South Central Confederation Super League, which the club won in 2009 to earn promotion for the 2009–10 season — still its only major honour. What followed was uneven: a tenth-place finish in that debut campaign, then a run that ended in relegation after 2016–17, a season in which Humble Lions actually finished first in the regular table before falling in the playoffs. The drop came down to finances and licensing failures rather than results on the pitch. The club has since worked its way back, competing in the Premier League again from 2022–23 through 2024–25.

Every return to that level puts Clarendon back in view, because the parish's other side, Vere United, sits just down the road in Hayes.
