Karbala have been back among Iraq's elite since earning promotion for the 2024–25 campaign.
The team took shape in 1958 as the Olympic Sports Club before the name changed to Karbala Sports Club the following year. The yellow and black have long been associated with the city, though the 2025–26 and 2026–27 kits have swapped that scheme for white and green. Home games are played at the Karbala International Stadium.
No league title or Iraq FA Cup sits in the club's cabinet. Those matches against Al-Najaf are known simply as the Karbala–Najaf derby, and Naft Al-Wasat SC provides the other fixture supporters mark on the calendar.
Al-Jaboury died in hospital a week later, on 30 June.
