LUGI HF

Runner-up finishes have followed the club around more often — in 1960, 1978, 1984, 1996 and again in 2014.

The handball section grew out of Lugi, the Lund University sports club founded in 1912, and was set up in 1941; it split off as its own association in 1993. Wine red became its colour in deliberate contrast to the blue of H43 Lund, the other side of the Lundderbyet.

The men's side pushed the run further in Europe than the domestic record alone suggests, reaching the European Cup semifinal in 1980–81, where SC Magdeburg ended it, then the Cup Winners' Cup last four in 1984–85 and the IHF Cup semifinal the year after. The women's team reached back-to-back SM finals in 2012 and 2013, losing both to IK Sävehof.

Mats Olsson kept goal for Lugi before going on to win the World Championship in 1990 and two Olympic silvers; he returned to the club as a goalkeeping coach and was inducted into the EHF Hall of Fame in 2024. Both the men's and women's teams dropped to Allsvenskan after finishing bottom of the Handbollsligan in 2024–25, and the men bounced straight back, winning promotion against VästeråsIrsta HF for 2026–27.

The championship of 1980 remains the only SM-guld in eighty-five years since the section was founded.
