It has been the home ground for the UTEP Miners' football team: the university that plays there began life as the State College of Mines and Metallurgy.
UTEP has played in the Sun Bowl itself as a bowl game 15 times, winning five, all of them between 1949 and 1967. The 1967 win was the last time the Miners took a bowl trophy of any kind.
Conference titles have been rarer still. The Miners took the Border Conference outright in 1956 and did not win another until 2000, when they shared the Western Athletic Conference championship with TCU.
