John Madden spent a single season lining up at offensive tackle for the Mustangs, in 1957.
The team took the field for the first time in 1915, a year after Californians voted the university itself into being, and the "Mustangs" tag came later still — students chose it over "Mules" in 1925, a nod to the wild horses that ran the hills around San Luis Obispo. That instinct for the local landscape has stayed part of the identity ever since.
The program has since moved up to the Division I Football Championship Subdivision and now plays in the Big Sky Conference, where it added a title of its own in 2012.
Capacity there stands at 11,075.
