That homecoming landed in the same season the women's team went all the way to the final of the Swedish Championship, losing out to IK Sävehof.

The club did not start out on its own. Handball had been played under the Önnereds IK banner since 1965, and it was only on 5 June 1985 that the section broke away to form its own club, shifting its base from the Önnered district across to Älvsborg in western Gothenburg. The men's side has moved between the top flight and the level below more than once, going up in 2013, dropping down in 2015 and returning in 2018; the women have been the more settled presence, in the Handbollsligan for most of the years since 2001 and without interruption since 2017.

Jessica Aronsson kept goal there for nearly a decade before her national-team career took her elsewhere, and Olivia Mellegård left the wing position open when she moved on to Sävehof and then to Copenhagen. Younger players still come through: Pelle Segertoft made his top-flight debut at 17 before leaving for Fredericia in 2025, a reminder that the pathway from the shared youth setup, run jointly with IK Nord under the name HK Önnerediterna, keeps producing players for other clubs to notice.

Matches against Redbergslids IK carry their own weight in Gothenburg, billed locally as the derby between the city's two handball sides.
