When Wilmington Hammerheads FC folded in 2017, Legion Stadium sat without a tenant, and it was that gap the city's soccer supporters kept pointing to when Port City FC took shape. The club joined the National Premier Soccer League as an expansion side for the 2024 season.
Wilmington gave the club its identity in a more literal way, too: "The Gulls" nods to the coastal city. Legion Stadium, shared history aside, holds 6,000.
President Joey Lipoff built the football side around head coach Nate Torbett, who took charge of the inaugural NPSL roster alongside associate coach Johnathan Johns.
