Hamamatsu shares its basketball team with Toyohashi, just across the prefectural line in Aichi, an arrangement that shows up in the club's own name: San-en. Home games are played at the Toyohashi City General Gymnasium.

The team started out in 1965 as the company side of OSG Corporation, a machine parts manufacturer based in Toyokawa. It carried the OSG name through several changes — OSG Phoenix, then OSG Higashimikawa Phoenix, then Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix — before the 2016 launch of the B.League gave it a reason to drop the corporate branding altogether and become San-en NeoPhoenix.

Since the switch, the closest the club has come is the Central Conference title in the 2023–24 season, without a run to the overall B.League championship. Thirdy Ravena spent four seasons in San-en colours before leaving in 2024, the season in which he was named the league's Impressive Asia Player of the Year.

Across the prefectural border sits Nagoya Diamond Dolphins, the club San-en meets most often as a fellow occupant of Aichi and of the league's western grouping. There is no named derby attached to the fixture, just the regularity of two Aichi-based sides sharing a conference table season after season.

What holds the club to its origins is the gymnasium in Toyohashi and the double-city name, both still pointing back to a works team built around a machine parts maker in Toyokawa six decades ago.
