About
B.League stands as the apex of professional basketball in Japan. The structure operates on a tripartite system, with the Premier division housing 26 teams. This tier sits above the One division, which contains 25 clubs, and the smaller Next division. The competition distinguishes itself through a rigid franchise licensing model rather than traditional promotion and relegation. Under reforms taking effect from the 2026–27 season, the top tier becomes a closed league of permanent members. Entry requires annual revenues of at least 1.2 billion yen, an average attendance of 4,000, and an arena capacity of 5,000 with suites. The regular season features a 60-game schedule for Premier teams. Clubs split into conferences comprising the East, Central, and West regions. Teams play 36 games against conference opponents and 24 against inter-conference rivals. The top eight sides advance to the playoffs, which include the top three from each conference and two wild cards. These knockout stages follow a best-of-three format through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. A draft system and a salary cap set at ¥800 million aim to ensure competitive balance within the closed structure. Utsunomiya Brex holds the record for the most titles, securing three championships. Alvark Tokyo has won two, while Nagasaki Velca claims the current title. The league emerged from the merger of the National Basketball League and the bj league, a consolidation mandated by FIBA following governance issues within the Japan Basketball Association. Saburō Kawabuchi oversaw this reorganization as president of the unified entity. This shift mirrors North American sports models more closely than European pyramids, prioritizing financial stability and facility standards over performance-based movement.
