Tokyo Sunrockers

In 2020 the All-Japan Basketball Championship was won by Sunrockers Shibuya, who played at the Aoyama Gakuin University Memorial Hall, a university gymnasium in the ward they were named after. Five years earlier the same club had taken the same trophy as the Hitachi Sunrockers. The name had changed in between. The club had not.

The names trace where it came from. It began in 1935 as the basketball side of Hitachi's headquarters, the Hitachi Honsha Rising Sun. In 2000 it merged with the Hitachi Osaka Basketball Club, which had existed since 1956, and the result was the Hitachi Sunrockers. In 2026 it changed again and became the Tokyo Sunrockers. Supporters shorten that to Tokyo SR, and the colours are purple and gold.

The 2026 change of name came with a move. From the 2026–27 season the club plays in the B.League at Toyota Arena Tokyo in Aomi, in Kōtō Ward. The arena holds 11,000, more than four times the capacity of the Shibuya hall. Sunrockers do not have it to themselves. Alvark Tokyo, their main rival, use the same building, so the Tokyo Derby is now played with both teams calling the arena home.

Tim Lewis is among the coaches the club has had. Robert Sacre, Ryan Kelly and James Michael McAdoo are among the imports who have played for it.
