Sarpsborg Women

Sarpsborg IL Håndball sit in the 1. divisjon, Norwegian women's handball second tier, after a spell down in the 2. divisjon as recently as 2019.

The handball section traces to 1940, within an athletics club founded on 12 November 1931, and the wait for a first trophy was not long by local standards: a county championship in 1947. The league titles that put Sarpsborg on the national handball map belong to a neighbouring club, Skjeberg IF, champions in 1969, 1982 and 1983, and that gap between the two clubs in the same town still shapes how Sarpsborg IL's own history reads.

Around 330 members keep the club going, playing out of Sarpsborghallen, where fire regulations cap the long-side stand at 488 of the venue's 1,688 seats. The rivalry that matters locally is with Fredrikstad Ballklubb.

The name still mentioned first when the club comes up is Ragnhild Aamodt. She arrived in 2009 after starting out at Skjeberg HK, played three seasons in Sarpsborg colours, and did so as a full international with an Olympic gold medal from 2008 and three European titles already behind her.
