The Bolshoy Ice Dome in Sochi was raised for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and once the Olympic hockey tournament ended the city needed a tenant to keep it in use. That tenant became HC Sochi, entered into the Kontinental Hockey League for the 2014–15 season on the strength of the infrastructure already standing. The arena holds 12,000 for hockey, and the club has played there since its first campaign.

The team took its identity from the animal on its crest, and "Leopards" stuck as the club's nickname, worn in the teal and navy that mark the jersey, with gold and white as trim. No league title has followed; the club's furthest run has been the quarterfinals, reached four times, in 2014–15, 2015–16, 2017–18 and 2018–19.

Artur Tyanulin built his name here rather than arriving with one, finishing as the club's all-time leading scorer with 133 points in 193 games. Andrei Kostitsyn brought a different kind of pedigree, a recognised NHL forward who put up 104 points in 133 games in Sochi colours.

In 2020 the club moved from the Tarasov Division to the Bobrov Division, a switch made to cut down on travel across a league that spans a continent. Sochi sits at its southern edge, close to nothing else in the KHL map, and the Bolshoy Ice Dome remains the fixed point the schedule has to work around.
