Club Friendly is not a formal competition or league in ice hockey. It is a generic classification used to describe non-competitive exhibition matches played between clubs. These games are typically arranged individually between teams or as part of small invitational events, rather than being part of a unified structure with standings, promotion, or relegation. The term serves as a label for pre-season periods when teams test line-ups without competitive stakes.
Participants in these matches come from various levels of the sport. Some are professional sides, such as Aalborg Pirates, who compete in the Danish Metal Ligaen, and Adler Mannheim, which plays in the German DEL. Others are developmental squads, including Academy Pilsen from the Czech University Ice Hockey League and Academy Zug, which participates in the Swiss League, the second tier of Swiss hockey. The mix of teams reflects the informal nature of the event, bringing together established professionals and emerging talent. Historically, clubs like Acroni Jesenice, which previously played in the Slovenian and Austrian leagues, have also been involved in such arrangements, though the team is now defunct.
These encounters differ significantly from structured tournaments. While clubs may face each other in formal competitions like the Champions Hockey League, those events have defined formats and governing bodies. Friendlies lack this rigidity. They offer an opportunity for coaches to evaluate players and for fans to see new signings in action. There is no recurring tournament specifically named "Club Friendly" that includes all these teams together. The label refers only to the nature of the match itself. The absence of a founding year, official website, or historical records for a "Club Friendly League" confirms it is not a formal entity. It is simply a way to categorise exhibition games that do not fit into the standard competitive calendar.
