About

Germany Cup refers to two distinct ice hockey competitions often conflated in English sources. The primary international event is the Deutschland Cup. Founded in 1987 by the German Ice Hockey Federation, it is an annual in-season tournament serving as preparation for national teams rather than part of the domestic league pyramid. The format is a four-team round-robin. Participants typically include Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Slovakia. Germany is the most successful nation in the tournament's history, having won multiple times in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2020s. The event is hosted in Landshut. A women’s tournament was added in 2023.

The domestic counterpart is the Deutscher Eishockeypokal. This knockout cup for club teams is analogous to the DFB-Pokal in football. Its history is fragmented. An early version called the DEV-Pokal was awarded in 1957/58 and intermittently through 1968. A true knockout cup was held in 1968/69 but discontinued. The modern iteration began in 2002/03, involving teams from the top-tier Deutsche Eishockey Liga and the second-tier 2. Bundesliga. Adler Mannheim won twice, while Eisbären Berlin, Kölner Haie, ERC Ingolstadt, DEG Metro Stars, and Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg each won once. The competition was suspended for top-tier clubs after the 2008/09 season due to scheduling conflicts with international competitions and the Champions Hockey League. From 2009 to 2013, it continued as the DEB-Pokal with only lower-division teams, with Bietigheim Steelers winning the final edition in 2012/13. There is currently no active senior men's domestic cup involving DEL teams. A women's DEB-Pokal has continued since 2001/02.
