Southern Hoiho enter the season as reigning Club of the Year in Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa, the honour picked up in 2025 alongside a General Manager of the Year award for Angela Ruske. The recognition arrived in the same year the Australian ownership group Sports Entertainment Network handed the franchise to a local Dunedin community group.
SEN unveiled the side on 29 March 2022, pairing it with the men's Otago Nuggets as New Zealand's top women's league prepared for its first season. The nickname comes from the yellow-eyed penguin, a taonga species of the region, and the colours — blue, gold and maroon — have stayed with the club since that launch.
On court, the scoring lists still run through Zoe Richards, who also leads the club for steals, while Samara Gallaher wears the captaincy and holds the appearance record.
The fixtures against Northern Kāhu carry the weight of a North-South derby, while Mainland Pouākai supply the South Island edge.
