On 3 October 1920, as the Panhandles, they took the field against the Dayton Triangles in the opening match of the American Professional Football Association, the body that would become the NFL two years later. The Canton Bulldogs and the crosstown Columbus Barracks also filled out the schedule, but Dayton remained the measure of the team.
The club had grown out of a railroad workforce.
Joe Carr ran the club as owner and manager; he became the NFL's second president in 1920 and held the post until his death in 1939. The Tigers played their home games at Neil Park, turning out in black, gold and white.
