Uganda U20

Kampala hosts the senior national side, the women's team and now the country's pipeline of teenage internationals, and it is the Hippos who do most of the travelling on FUFA's behalf. The age group has built its own record along the way.

The team first appeared in African Youth Championship qualifiers in September 1984, away to Sudan. CECAFA is where the record is thickest: five titles, in 1973, 2006, 2010, 2020 and 2022, against four runner-up finishes stretching back to 1981.

Uganda reached the final of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 2021, losing 2–0 to Ghana, with captain Derrick Kakooza having scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against Tunisia to get them there. Two years later they went out in the quarter-finals to Nigeria, 0–1.

Training runs through the MTN Omondi Stadium in Kampala, a 10,000-capacity ground also known by its older names, Lugogo or Phillip Omondi Stadium, and through the FUFA Technical Centre at Njeru for camps ahead of regional tournaments. Home fixtures of any size move to the Nelson Mandela National Stadium at Namboole, which now holds 45,000 since its renovation — more than four times what the training base can take.
