Juba Stadium closed for renovation and came back in June 2024 with 7,000 seats. The under-20 side did not exist before South Sudan's own football association joined FIFA in 2012; until then, players from the region turned out for Sudan's junior team. The current side was put together in 2018 and lost its first match, 1–5 to Uganda in Kampala.

In 2020 the Bright Stars beat Kenya 2–1 in the third-place match at the CECAFA U-20 Championship, and two years later they went further still, reaching the final of the same tournament — only for Uganda to beat them 1–2. The team missed the semi-finals altogether at the 2024 edition.

Egypt in 2023 gave the age group its clearest breakthrough. South Sudan reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations U20 for the first time, drawing 0–0 with Uganda and then beating the Central African Republic 1–0 — the country's first-ever win at that tournament, scored from the penalty spot by Paul Mara Jawa. Gambia ended the run in the last eight, 5–0.

Goalkeeper Mayen Mayen has gone on to play for Western United in Australia. The federation itself still runs largely through social media rather than a website of its own, and for all the CECAFA finals and the run in Egypt, the Bright Stars have yet to turn a final into a title.
