A rowing school on Malaya Filyovskaya Street once decided handball was a better use of its boarders' hours, and the switch stuck. MSSUOR No. 2 took its present shape as a specialised boarding academy in 1977, and the men's and women's sides it produced have carried the name through Moscow handball ever since.

The men's team settled into the Higher League, the second tier, while graduates went on to make their names elsewhere. Denis Smolyanets and Ilya Ryabov passed through on their way to Spartak Moscow and Chekhovskiye Medvedi. The women's programme stayed inside the Super League while the men's side worked a division below.

What UOR No. 2 has kept, through all of that, is Spartak Moscow across the net.
