The fixture that matters most at Ystad Arena is not a European night but a trip up the coast to Malmö. Matches against HK Malmö are billed as the Skånederby, and little else on the calendar carries the same weight for a club that spent twelve years, from 1994 to 2006, outside the top flight after relegation forced a rebuild from the regional leagues up.

That absence makes the two most recent championships read differently from the ones before them. The 1976 and 1992 titles came from a club already established among Sweden's best; the 2022 title ended a thirty-year wait, and 2025 followed it with a three-match final against Hammarby IF that swung on a second leg lost 37–35 after Ystad let a lead slip. They closed out the decider anyway, adding a Swedish Cup for the second year running.

No player carries more weight in the club's history than Carl "Basti" Rasmussen, who scored 1,526 goals between 1974 and 1991 and later returned twice as coach, spanning both the club's post-1992 peak and its years working back toward the top division. Mats Persson sits behind him on the all-time list, and Kim Andersson has bridged two spells on the court, from 1998 to 2001 and again from 2015 onward, long enough to have played through the years of struggle and the years of titles alike.

Handball at Ystad traces back to 1929, three decades after the parent sports club had already taken shape in the town, and the section only became its own entity in 1992 — the same year it first won the Swedish Championship.
