Arena 8888 Sofia
Sofia, Bulgaria
Formerly: Arena Sofia, Arena Armeec Sofia
The blue court is set inside a sea of red chairs, a contrast that defines the interior of the Arena 8888 Sofia. It is a multi-purpose arena in the Slatina district of Sofia, opened on July 30, 2011. While the surface is natural parquet, the first image captures the venue during a tennis event, with "DIEMA XTRA SOFIA OPEN 2018" branding visible on the hoardings. The capacity shifts depending on the sport; for tennis, it sits at 10,500, though it reaches 12,373 for general sports.
The red seats curve upwards in steep tiers, creating a sense of enclosure around the playing area. This was not always the name on the box. From 2012 until September 1, 2024, it was known as Arena Armeec Sofia, named after the Bulgarian insurance company. The sponsorship ended in October 2022, but the name remained until the 2024 rebrand. The current title is linked to the online gambling platform 8888.bg.
The venue hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2015 and the Men's European Volleyball Championship in 2015. It also welcomed the 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championship. A sold-out volleyball match between France and Bulgaria on June 9, 2012, drew 12,501 fans, marking the first time the building reached full capacity. The architect Zheko Tilev designed the space, which opened with a friendly volleyball match between Bulgaria and Serbia.
