«The Lions»
At the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, Bulgaria sent both national volleyball teams home with medals from the same Games: the men took silver, the women bronze.
Between those two came bronze at the World Championships of 1949, 1952, 1986 and 2006, and at the European Championships of 1955, 1981, 1983 and 2009, plus bronze at the 2007 World Cup and silver at the 2015 European Games. Matey Kaziyski, named MVP of the Champions League in 2009 , and Plamen Konstantinov, known to supporters as "Gibona," are among the names most tied to that stretch. Rivalries with the Soviet Union, later Russia, and with Serbia run through much of it.
The women's team has its own high point: the 1981 European Championship title, won a year after Olympic bronze in Moscow. Galina Borisova and Petya Barakova are remembered from that side. Unlike the men, who play as "The Lions," the women's team has never taken a nickname of its own, nor kept a single home hall, appearing in cities that include Sofia and Plovdiv.
The men play at Arena 8888 Sofia, a 12,373-seat hall in the capital once known as Arena Sofia and Arena Armeets, in white, green and red drawn from the national flag.
