West Germany and East Germany fielded separate volleyball teams through the decades of division, one under the Deutscher Volleyball-Verband, the other under the DSVB, and it was East Germany that carried the country's early honours: World Cup gold in Berlin in 1969, world champions the following year, then Olympic silver in Munich in 1972. Reunification in 1990 folded both federations into one, and the merged team took the records of both predecessors as its own. The DVV that now governs the side traces back to 1955, founded in Kassel under Johannes Zeigert.
Germany has no fixed home ground, moving between the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart, and the MBS Arena in Potsdam, a 2,050-seat hall. The nickname Die Adler stuck alongside the older Die Mannschaft.
Georg Grozer has been the face of the modern side, an opposite with well over 200 caps who played at the London Olympics and at Paris 2024, where Germany ground out a bronze medal after a quarter-final run. A 2014 World Championship bronze, sealed with a 3–1 win over France, and a European League title from 2009, won 3–2 against Spain, are also among the team's honours.
