Prague, August 1946: France's men made their international debut against Czechoslovakia and lost 0–3, a quiet start for a side that would need decades to find its footing in Europe. The wait for a first continental title ran until 2015, when the team won the European Championship on shared home ground in Bulgaria and Italy, and by then the federation behind the shirt, the Fédération française de volley, was already approaching its own eightieth year, founded in Créteil in February 1936.
What followed the 2015 title reshaped the team's standing in the sport. Under Laurent Tillie, France reached the Tokyo Olympic final in 2021 and beat Russia 3–2 for their first Olympic gold. Three years later, with Andrea Giani now in charge, they did it again on home soil in Paris, defeating Poland to become back-to-back champions. Between those two finals the squad also collected the Volleyball Nations League twice, in Bologna in 2022 and Łódź in 2024, a run that left no doubt the Olympic title was not a one-off.
The team plays as Les Bleus, in royal blue at home and white away, and its oldest running story on court is with Italy: the "derby Italie-France" has produced some of the team's sharpest European finals, including a 3–2 win over the Italians in 2003. Earvin N'Gapeth has been the player most associated with that era of finals, alongside a captain in Benjamin Toniutti who steadied the side through the transition from Tillie's group to Giani's.
France has no single home ground; matches are spread across cities nationwide. For the biggest occasions, the team returns to the Accor Arena in Paris, a 20,300-seat hall in Bercy that has hosted the sport's largest French crowds and, in 2024, an Olympic final played in front of them.
