Matches against Turkey and Cyprus have carried a weight that had little to do with the scoreline, drawing protests tied to politics rather than to any rivalry built on the volleyball court itself.
That absence of a settled enemy fits a program that has spent most of its history proving it belongs on the same schedule as bigger federations. The Israel Volleyball Association took charge of the team in 1953, not long after Israel had already sent it to the 1951 European Championship and the 1952 World Championship. For decades the results stayed modest: 10th place at the Worlds in 1952, 1956, 1962 and 1970, and the same finish at the 1951 Europeans. There is no nickname with the swagger of "The Lions," used elsewhere in Israeli football and basketball — supporters and commentators call the volleyball side "The Blue-Whites," a name that describes the kit rather than claims anything about the team.
