The Netherlands men's team took its only Olympic title in Atlanta in 1996, beating Italy 17-15 in a fifth set. It arrived there off the back of a run through the 1990s that Dutch volleyball calls its golden era: silver at the 1992 Olympics, a World League title the year of the Atlanta win, and an unbeaten run to the European Championship in 1997. None of it happened by accident. Coach Joop Alberda, who took over from Arie Selinger, built the team around the so-called Bankras Model, pulling the squad into full-time national training rather than leaving players to club schedules.
The federation behind the team, the Nederlandse Volleybalbond, was founded in Amsterdam in September 1947 and is now based in Utrecht. The side has trained at Topsportcentrum Rotterdam since 2022. Since the 1990s peak, the team has stayed competitive without repeating that height, taking European League gold in 2006 and again in 2012.
Games against Belgium carry their own weight in the Dutch calendar, played as the Low Countries derby, while Italy, Russia and Poland have supplied the sterner tests over the years. Joel Banks took over as head coach in February 2025, succeeding Roberto Piazza, with Wessel Keemink wearing the captain's armband.
