Poland and Italy occupy the space Serbia's men measure themselves against now, though for a generation before that it was Russia they had to get past. The team wears the record of a country that no longer exists under that name: the Olympic gold from Sydney in 2000 and the bronze from Atlanta in 1996 were won as FR Yugoslavia, as was the World Championship silver of 1998, before the shirt changed to Serbia and Montenegro and then, in 2006, to Serbia alone. The federation itself dates to 1946, formed inside Yugoslavia's physical culture association before it broke off as an independent body in 1949, and it is that continuous federation, recognised by the FIVB and CEV, which carries the older results forward into the current team's history.
Zoran Gajić coached the side to that 2000 Olympic title and the European Championship the following year; Nikola Grbić, who had played under him, later took the bench himself and delivered a World League gold in 2016 and a European Championship in 2019, with Uroš Kovačević named the tournament's MVP. Between those two European titles sits a third, in 2011, plus eight bronzes at the same competition stretching back to 1975. Gheorghe Crețu has led the team since 2025.
Big nights are played at the Belgrade Arena rather than a ground the team calls its own, with Hala Pionir in Belgrade and the sports centre in Novi Sad used alongside it. The last two Nations League campaigns ended 10th in 2024 and 15th in 2025.
