The Red Dragons spent 2025 chasing a place among the sport's top tier, reaching the quarterfinals of the FIVB World Championship before finishing seventh, then took their first Nations League bow this year. Neither result carries the weight of what the team did in 2013, but both point to a squad still built around the generation that followed it.
That year remains the reference point. Under Dominique Baeyens, Belgium won the CEV European League without dropping a match, going 14-0 and beating Croatia in the final. It was the first European title in the team's history, and it pulled Belgium back into the FIVB World Championship in 2014 after 36 years away. Pieter Coolman, still part of the squad's recent history as a middle blocker, took gold that day. Four years later, in Azerbaijan and Georgia, the team went further than ever at the European Championship, finishing fourth.
Emanuele Zanini has coached the side since 2022, taking over from Andrea Anastasi. The captaincy sits with Sam Deroo, an outside hitter whose club career has run through Zenit Kazan and Halkbank, while Ferre Reggers has emerged as the team's opposite at Allianz Milano. In 2024 the Red Dragons reached the final of the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup, losing to China.
Belgium has no fixed home hall, moving instead between venues such as Sportcity Charleroi and, for the bigger nights, the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. It is a pattern set almost from the start: the federation now known as Volley Belgium was founded on 27 October 1945, and the national team has carried its colours across the country's arenas ever since, with a single Olympic appearance still dating back to Mexico City in 1968.
