There is no single ground to call home. Latvia's men rotate their fixtures through the Rimi Olympic Centre in Riga, a hall that seats 830, along with courts in Daugavpils, Valmiera and Jelgava, so a home match can mean any one of four cities depending on the calendar.

The national side took shape in 1991, once Latvia had restored its independence and could field a team of its own again outside the Soviet system. Long stretches followed with little to show at continental level, until 2023, when the team won the CEV European Silver League outright — the gold medal stands as the best result in its history, five years after a bronze in the same competition. At the European Championship proper, the closest Latvia has come is the round of 16, in 2021.

The fixture that matters most is against Estonia, played as the Baltic Derby; one meeting in August 2018 was billed at home as "Gadsimta cīņa" — the Century Battle. Matches against Ukraine carry their own weight, described by the current coaching setup as a principled contest rather than a routine one.

Uģis Krastiņš took over as head coach in March 2026, arriving with experience from his time in charge of Ukraine's national team and of Barkom-Kažany, and replacing Rainers Vasiljevs, who had held the post since 2024.

No player is tied to the team's story more closely than Gundars Celitāns, an opposite who captained the side from 2004 to 2017 and was named Best Player of Italy's Serie A1 in the 2012–13 season.
