Slovakia's men have won the CEV European League twice, first in 2008 in Bursa and again in 2011 on home ground in Košice, and between those two titles they also took bronze at the 2007 Final Four in Portugal. The 2011 win still stands as the clearest marker of what the team can do when the format suits them, arriving the same year they reached the quarterfinals of the European Championship and finished fifth overall, their best showing in that competition.

The national side formed in 1993, after Czechoslovakia split, and played its first match that May against Belarus. What followed was a rivalry that outlasted the country it grew from: fixtures against the Czech Republic are still called the "bratské derby," the brotherly derby, a name that carries more weight in volleyball than in most sports given how recently the two federations were one.

Results since the European League years have been harder to come by. Slovakia finished seventh in the 2021 Golden League, ninth in 2022 and eleventh in 2023, a gradual slide rather than a single bad tournament. Michal Masný took over as coach in November 2025; he played more than 200 caps for the national team as a setter and was named its best in 2007 and 2011, the same two seasons that produced the European League gold and the bronze. Emanuel Kohút captains the side as a middle blocker. The team has qualified for the 2026 European Championship in Italy.

There is no fixed home arena — matches move between cities — but Bratislava's Ondrej Nepela Arena, known commercially as Tipos Aréna, serves as the usual base, holding just over 10,000 for the nights the federation brings the team home.
