Greece last measured itself against the continent's best in the European League, taking silver in 2014 after reaching bronze eight years earlier.
The federation running the side, the Hellenic Volleyball Federation, formed in 1970 when Theodoros Andreadakou led a breakaway from the body that had overseen volleyball as part of a wider ball-games federation since 1965. Since then the team has carried the name Ethniki Andron rather than any invented nickname, playing in the blue and white of the flag.
Without a fixed home ground, the side has moved between venues depending on the occasion.
The earlier honours board is thinner but not empty. The Mediterranean Games have brought three bronze medals — in 1971, 1983 and as recently as 2018 — either side of a silver in Split in 1979.
The team continues to compete for qualification and continental honours through the European federation's calendar.
