PalaLottomatica in Rome holds around 11,200 for a volleyball night, though the national team has never treated it as a fixed home: matches move between there and halls in Bari, Genoa, Novara and Modena, following wherever the calendar and the crowds make sense.
The federation running the side, FIPAV, was founded in 1946, and the players who wear its colours became known as Gli Azzurri for the sky blue once carried by Italian sides in honour of the House of Savoy. That colour has stayed on the shirt through a run of results few volleyball nations can match.
The record includes five World Championship titles, the most recent won in 2025, and seven European titles. But the number that says most about the team's peak is eight World League wins between 1990 and 2000. What has eluded the team, through three Olympic silvers and three bronzes, is gold; 1996, 2004 and 2016 all ended one match short.
Ferdinando De Giorgi, who took over as head coach in 2021, built the current group around setter Simone Giannelli, the captain, and a core drawn heavily from Itas Trentino, including Alessandro Michieletto and Daniele Lavia on the outside. Beneath the senior side, the pipeline through Club Italia has kept producing winners in its own right, with the under-21 team taking a world title in 2021.
There is no single rival that defines the team the way a derby would; Brazil, Poland, France and Russia have all supplied the sharpest contests over the years. For now the side carries the freshest possible credential into its next assignment, arriving as reigning world champions after the 2025 title.
