BJK Akatlar Arena

The BJK Akatlar Arena sits in the Akaretler neighbourhood. It is a facility assembled for training and smaller contests. The brick building visible from the street looks more like an office block than a sports centre, its windows reflecting the sky rather than projecting an image of spectacle.

Inside, the space is defined by the parquet floor and the basketball hoops set up in the centre. The stands rise steeply on one side, packed with seats rather than concrete. This is where the men's and women's basketball teams play their home fixtures, and where the women's volleyball squad once practiced before the department closed in 2019. There are no drums, only the squeak of trainers on the wood and the occasional shout from the coaching staff on the sidelines.

The complex extends beyond the main hall. Four synthetic outdoor pitches lie adjacent to the arena, where the younger players spend their mornings. A swimming pool and a fitness centre occupy the other wings, completing the picture of a self-contained sports village. The venue underwent a renovation in 2020, adding to the modern feel of the interior without altering the fundamental layout.

Its history is marked by frequent name changes, reflecting the shifting sponsorship deals behind the scenes. Originally known as the BJK Akatlar Spor Kompleksi, it has carried the names of various financial partners over the years before settling back on the simple Akatlar Arena title. It has also served as a concert hall, hosting international acts when the basketball courts were cleared. For the local supporters, the arena is simply the place where the teams come to work.
