Capital One Arena
Washington, D.C., United States
Formerly: MCI Center, Verizon Center
The arena sits at the edge of Chinatown. It opened in December 1997 .
It has worn three names since the start. It opened as the MCI Center, and became the Verizon Center after the acquisition in January 2006 . The last change came on August 9, 2017 , when Capital One took the rights.
For the Washington Wizards and the Capitals, the floor is the same. The last record belongs to the Washington Mystics, who drew 20,711 people for a WNBA game against Indiana on September 19, 2024 .
The most recent work was a renovation that began in 2025 , doubling the size of the building while keeping the number of seats roughly the same. Before that, a smaller project in 2019 updated the seating. The arena has hosted everything from the 2003 Figure Skating Championships to the 2025 inauguration celebrations, which were moved indoors due to the cold.
